NOW HIRING: Senior Wildlife Biologist
The North Slope Borough (NSB)’s Department of Wildlife Management (DWM) (www.northslope.org/departments/wildlife-management) is seeking a Senior Wildlife Biologist to take a leadership role in the Department. The position will focus on research and management of important subsistence species to our communities with a focus on terrestrial animals, specifically caribou. The person to fill this position will be expected to actively liaise with our Federal and State partners and work closely with our hunters and communities. The candidate will supervise staff, help lead the research programs within the department and be involved in reviewing and generating State and Federal Board proposals in conjunction with the North Slope State and Federal Subsistence Regional Advisory committees.
The North Slope Borough (NSB) is a municipal government encompassing the entire North Slope of Alaska. The successful applicant will be required to live in Utqiavik, Alaska. The position will focus on research but will also provide advice to the NSB Mayor and staff on environmental change with respect to wildlife, industrial activities, and review of technical documents including those related to oil and gas or other commercial activities. The candidate will need strong communication skills and be able to communicate technical issues to a variety of stakeholders.
Qualifications include: (1) Doctoral degree in a field related to biological science or management, (2) 10 years of supervisory experience, (3) 10 years of work experience in environmental and/or wildlife/fisheries research and management, and (4) 10 years of wildlife/fisheries work experience in the arctic. We prefer applicants with: (1) a strong background in Arctic ecology, (2) field experience in remote locations, (3) experience working with Indigenous peoples and issues, (4) strong communication skills and collaborative experience, and (5) and enthusiasm for living in a remote but vibrant community.
Salary:
$4,775.48 bi-weekly; $124,162.48 annually.
