Company History
Vectronic Aerospace: A Legacy of Innovation in Wildlife Telemetry
The story of Vectronic Aerospace began in the wake of one of history’s most transformative events—the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. As Eastern and Western Germany reunited, biologists at a Berlin university saw an opportunity to study how wildlife, specifically roe deer, responded to the newly accessible landscape. They needed GPS collars with remote communication capabilities, but the existing options from North America were prohibitively expensive.
Turning to their colleagues in the university’s aeronautics department, the biologists requested a custom-built GPS collar to track whether the roe deer recognized the removal of the wall as an opportunity—was "the grass greener on the other side"? The collaboration resulted in the first Vectronic Aerospace GPS collars, which provided groundbreaking insights into the movement and home range adjustments of the roe deer.
The success of these initial GPS collars spread by word of mouth, and soon, researchers from other universities and institutions sought similar technology. As demand grew, the two aeronautics faculty members faced a pivotal decision: remain in academia or transition into the commercial production of wildlife telemetry solutions.
In 2000, they took the leap, founding Vectronic Aerospace with just three employees. Over the years, the company has expanded significantly, now employing over 70 professionals from 12 different countries. Today, Vectronic Aerospace stands as the global leader in wildlife GPS collars and telemetry technology, supporting researchers worldwide with cutting-edge tools for wildlife conservation and ecological studies.
