Description
This position involves surveying and monitoring special-status species for environmental compliance projects. The role includes collecting and analyzing biological data to evaluate project-level impacts and ensure that potential environmental impacts are avoided, minimized, or mitigated.
The position may also include Forestry Technician fieldwork in support of Timber Harvest Plans (THPs) and other forest management activities.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities
Conduct Northern Spotted Owl (NSO) surveys and monitoring
Maintain a rodent colony and feed live mice for NSO survey work
Research agency records, databases, scientific literature, and GIS data to inform assessments
Perform field observations, identification, and monitoring of wildlife and vegetation, including:
Special-status species
Bird identification by sight and sound
Habitat assessments and vegetation mapping
GPS/GIS data collection and mapping
Interpret and apply sensitive species survey protocols
Prepare and compile technical reports summarizing survey findings
Conduct environmental compliance monitoring and documentation
Perform QA/QC on compliance documentation
Collaborate with foresters and construction teams to ensure regulatory compliance
Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members
Complete assignments on time or proactively communicate delays
Take initiative and seek opportunities for increased responsibility
Required Skills & Abilities
Ability to safely navigate steep, remote terrain in adverse weather conditions, often for extended hours
Willingness to work independently or in small teams, including conducting nighttime field surveys
Ability to perform biological field assessments under variable conditions
Flexibility to adapt to changing workloads, environments, and project requirements
Strong problem-solving skills and sound judgment in complex situations
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, or willingness to develop them
Ability to collect, organize, and analyze data to support clear recommendations
Strong time management, organization, and follow-through skills
Ability to work independently and seek guidance when needed
Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
Basic GIS skills for data research, analysis, and mapping
Other duties may be assigned.
Preferred (Not Required) Qualifications
Experience mediating conflicts among stakeholders in the field
Experience conducting biological surveys for:
Spotted owl
Migratory nesting birds (including raptors)
Special-status amphibians (Rana species)
Marbled murrelet (Brachyramphus marmoratus)
Experience using specialized forestry/field equipment (e.g., relaskop, prism, diameter tape, clinometer, laser, chainsaw, ATV)
Experience with:
Plant, stream, or jurisdictional water inspections
Construction monitoring
Invasive species management
Wildlife handling
California General Permit and SWPPP inspections
Education Requirements
Bachelor’s degree (B.S. or B.A.) in Biology, Forestry, Environmental Science, Natural Resources, or a related field.
Certifications & Licenses
Valid California Driver’s License
Clean driving record
