Job Summary

Sequoia is looking for a Senior Biologist to perform at a senior project manager level based in our Sacramento or Walnut Creek office. The candidate will be assigned complex projects located throughout California supporting a variety of clients. We are looking for a dynamic individual who enjoys working independently and with teams.  We are looking for a “seller doer” who is experienced in project management and staff coordination, deliverable oversight and QAQC, business development, field surveys, impacts analysis, permit assessment, and report preparation for biological work. This individual will be a member of the Sequoia leadership team and will supervise 3-6 team members.  Travel may be necessary, with mostly day trips within the San Francisco Bay Area. Occasional overnight travel will be expected to other offices in California, such as Monterey, San Diego, and Sacramento.


  • Manage environmental projects ranging from biological assessments and documentation, scheduling to meet deadline goals, allocating resources, collecting data, writing reports, and communicating with team members and clients.
  • Prepare environmental permitting application packages with local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Assist clients and staff with the interpretation of current local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Assist clients and staff with environmental permitting, compliance monitoring, and reporting.
  • Coordinate with USACE, USFWS, CDFW, RWQCB, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Work closely with clients to successfully design and oversee projects from inception to completion.
  • Work with leadership and marketing team on strategic pursuits. Identify and develop new business opportunities. Prepare budgets, proposals, and conduct business development and client outreach
  • Ensure quality, scheduling, and budget objectives are met.
  • Actively participate in key trade organizations and in the marketplace.
  • Lead multiple projects within scope/budget/schedule expectations and ensure quality standards on project deliverables.
  • Act as the main point of contact for staff to reach out to with questions, concerns, and direction.
  • Strive to build long-term and effective relationships with clients and the Sequoia team.

  • BS or MS in environmental studies, biology, natural resources, ecology, forestry, or a related field.
  • 5-10 years project manager experience in consulting, including cost estimating, scheduling, scope development and management, and proposals and marketing.
  • Experience leading biological planning, permitting, compliance, or mitigation projects and/or programs.
  • Thorough understanding of CEQA, NEPA and other federal and state regulatory requirements.
  • Understanding of procurement processes for environmental consulting.
  • Experience supervising others (mentoring, managing workload, goal setting, annual reviews, etc.).
  • Experience preparing or contributing to biological assessment reports and other documentation.
